Hypnosis
Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness characterized by deep relaxation, focused attention and increased suggestibility. Used therapeutically (hypnotherapy) since Franz Mesmer (18th century, "mesmerism") and modern (James Braid, 1843, coined the term "hypnosis"). It is recognized in clinical psychology, although still controversial in some applications.
Esoteric uses
Hypnotic regression to "past lives", channelling, contact with "spiritual guides" — applications considered controversial. The American Psychological Association cautions about the unreliability of memories recovered under hypnosis.
