Astrology was born in Mesopotamia over four thousand years ago as an attempt to read the heavens in search of omens. The system we know today — twelve zodiac signs, ten planets, twelve houses — was formalized in Hellenistic Greece around the 2nd century BC and codified by astronomer Claudius Ptolemy in the Tetrabiblos (2nd century AD), a reference text until the Renaissance.
At Tarotsim we offer the essential astrological calculations — natal chart, ascendant, moon and sun signs — and six cultural horoscope traditions: Western, Chinese, Mayan, Egyptian, Japanese, and Tibetan. All free, with AI interpretation.
The fundamental calculations
- Natal Chart — snapshot of the sky at your exact moment of birth.
- Ascendant — the sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. The "social mask".
- Moon Sign — Moon position. Governs the emotional world.
- Sun Sign — the "sign" everyone knows. Conscious essence.
- Compatibility — synastry between two charts.
The six cultural horoscopes
Beyond the Greco-Roman tradition, we offer the Western daily horoscope, Chinese horoscope (12 animals + 5 elements over 60 years), Mayan horoscope (Tzolkin of 260 days), Egyptian, Japanese (blood types), and Tibetan horoscope.
Why the ascendant matters
Many know their sun sign without knowing their ascendant. But in many currents of Western astrology, the ascendant is as important as the Sun. While the sun sign is the internal essence, the ascendant is the mask you show others — your way of walking in the world. To calculate it, you need the exact hour of birth.
Frequently asked questions
Why are there 12 signs?
Because the Moon has approximately 12 lunar cycles per solar year. The Babylonians — who systematized the zodiac — divided the sky into 12 constellations to track this correspondence.
Does Ophiuchus exist as a sign?
As a constellation, yes — astronomy recognizes 13 constellations on the ecliptic. As an astrological sign, no: Western astrology works with the solar year divided into 12 equal segments of 30°.
Does the natal chart need exact birth time?
Ideally yes. Without time, the chart can be calculated for "midday" as an approximation, but the ascendant and houses become imprecise.
