Trance
Trance is an altered state of consciousness characterized by attentional dissociation from ordinary reality. It can be spontaneous (deep meditation, prayer, dance, drumming) or induced (hypnosis, drugs, sensory deprivation). Central in shamanism, Afro-diasporic religions (incorporation) and spiritism (mediumistic trance).
Trance and neuroscience
Modern neuroscience studies trance with neuroimaging (fMRI, EEG). Identifies decreased activity in the default mode network (Brewer, 2011). Real phenomenon, not "fake".
