Axinomancy
Axinomancy (Greek axine, axe) is divination using an axe: throwing onto the ground, balancing on a stake, or driving into a tree. Ancient mantic art mentioned by Pliny the Elder, used to find buried treasures or identify thieves.
Classical methods
Drive the axe in a tree trunk: the direction the handle falls indicates the answer. Or place a fire stone on the blade in heat and observe its trajectory.
